Finally Home: A series of unfortunate events

I have always heard people talk about how stressful building a house is. That if you and your spouse can make it through building a house, you can make it through anything. Well I’m just here to say, Micah and I will be holding hands crossing through those pearly gates because if we made it through the past two years, we can make it through anything.

Let’s just take this story all the way back to the beginning. Micah and I got married in July of 2020. Shortly before our wedding, we picked out a spot on our family land where we wanted our forever home to be. It was a beautiful little place in the middle of some trees. Off the road enough for our future kids to be able to run and play without the fear of them getting in the road. The pond would have been in the back yard. Just the perfect little spot. A few trees needed to be cleaned out, so Micah got to work cutting them down, pushing them up into the hole and burning them. WELL…shortly after all that ground work, HUGE sink holes started opening up all around where we planned to build our home.

Back to the drawing board we went.

After our wedding, we walked around the land looking for another place to build. We agreed on a spot right past my mom and dads house. We decided we would share a driveway with them. My grandparents so graciously gifted us 4 acres to build our forever on.

Plans were drawn. Decisions were made. We had everything lined up ready to go. We were going to build a barndominium style home that would eventually turn into our shop and my studio.

Fast forward to March 2021, we broke ground. Just a few days later, we found out we were pregnant! So we changed up our plans just a little to make things slightly more “baby friendly”.

SIX. MONTHS. LATER. our foundation was poured. That was the most stressful, emotional, frustrating six months of my life. (Or so I thought…) I called our concrete guy and cried, begging him to come pour our concrete because all I wanted was to bring my baby home to our house.

Needless to say, that didn’t happen.

Kobe was born at the end of November. By this point, we had the framework of our house built. We had windows and doors ready to be put in place. We had all the plumbing fixtures and kitchen appliances. We were just waiting on the metal siding to be put on. So we brought Kobe home to my parents house to wait out the rest of our build.

One week goes by. A record breaking storm is rolling through surrounding states. When it hit us, it knocked down the entire framework of our house.

Back to the drawing board…again.

We wait, and we wait, and we wait some more. The builders finally get back and get three walls framed up. More waiting. Then the truss come in so the roof and the final wall can be put up.

On to the metal siding. We hired it out. He put the metal on BACKWARDS. My dad and Micah catch it, they fire him. And end up putting all the metal on themselves.

When I tell you that we have had a problem every step of the way, I mean it. If it could go wrong, it was going to go wrong. My sweet daddy and husband built the majority of our house themselves. They have put in countless hours of work, blood, sweat, and tears. (Okay, the tears mostly came from me).

But FINALLY, two years and three months after breaking ground, we are HOME!!!

And we will never build a house ever again.
